At least 155 countries have also signed the Global Methane Pledge, which calls for a 30% reduction in emissions. The pledge initially launched in 2021, but since then, methane emissions have continued to rise . To help change that trajectory, the US and Europe last year issued regulations cracking down on methane emissions from fossil fuel infrastructure. By 2027, those imports will have to meet methane emissions standards on par with Europe's.

Satellites are the next tool that will hold oil and gas companies accountable in their promise to cut methane emissions and slow global warming. This, in turn, means oil and gas companies responsible for the plumes can be notified faster and potentially take action. Energy Minister Ebba Busch said the government was planning a "massive build out" of new nuclear power by 2045. "It's decisive for the green transition, for Swedish jobs and at heart for the welfare of our citizens," she told reporters. Countries like Poland, the Czech Republic, and Britain are looking at expanding nuclear power as societies transition to a fossil-fuel free future. Sweden voted to get rid of nuclear power in 1980, and has only six of an original 12 reactors still in production.

LITTLETON, Colorado, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Mainland Europe's two largest economies have reached key power price deals this month that should set the stage for increased power consumption by industry from 2024 onwards. Higher power and industrial output will in turn likely generate higher total emissions, even amid ongoing efforts to deploy more clean energy throughout Europe's power systems. Both power deals aim to reduce costs and boost energy supplies to households and businesses next year, and will likely spur a rise in total power consumption across Europe following a rare contraction in Europe's power use so far in 2023. Power output from fossil fuels also dropped by around 10% through October, while power generation from clean sources rose by 3.6% to result in a 2.4% decline in Europe's total power generation through the first 10 months of the year. Europe's power generation and power sector emissions dip in 2023Europe's power emissions look set to rebound in 2024 if overall power output increases, as more generation from power plants fuelled by natural gas and coal will be needed alongside greater generation from renewable sources to ensure higher stable power supplies to consumers.

WIDESPREAD IMPACTAny shortfall in France's total power generation will have Europe-wide repercussions due to the scale of France's clean power supplies. Even with the rapid advances in clean power generation throughout most major European economies in recent years, France still accounts for over 25% of total clean power generation in the European Union, data from think tank Ember shows. (AP) — Offshore wind power company Orsted is trying to get out of a $300 million guarantee it agreed to pay New Jersey in the event it failed to build its first wind farm off the state's coast. Last Tuesday, the Danish firm scrapped its Ocean Wind I and II projects in southern New Jersey, saying the projects were no longer financially feasible. It also was obligated to pay an additional $200 million toward the development of the offshore wind industry in New Jersey. In September, Apple announced its next-generation smartwatch models would all have a "carbon neutral" option, at the same price as the non-carbon neutral options, starting at $249. For Apple, making a product "carbon neutral" means that it changed its operations — including manufacturing, packaging and shipping — to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with making and selling its watches. Depending on who you talk to, dubbing a product "carbon neutral" when the accounting requires buying carbon credits is either Apple acting responsibly and doing the best it can to contribute to climate mitigation strategies that are available right now, or an irresponsible misrepresentation of what "carbon neutral" should mean. The relative effectiveness of nature-based carbon credits is contentious because some forestry carbon credits have been shown to be nullified when, for example, the forests set aside for carbon credits burn in wildfire season. Even if the carbon credits Apple buys are of the highest quality, carbon credits are, by their very nature, an accounting strategy.

"We'll be able to announce in October electricity prices that are in line with our competitiveness," he said, adding this would apply to households and businesses. However, French officials say Germany is undermining a traditional French strength due to fears cheap nuclear electricity could provide French businesses with a competitive advantage over German companies. WASHINGTON (AP) — Efforts by the Biden administration to limit pollution from automobile tailpipes — a major source of planet-warming emissions — face a crucial test as legal challenges brought by Republican-led states head to a federal appeals court. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit will hear arguments Thursday and Friday on three cases challenging Biden administration rules targeting cars and trucks.
